We discovered Abe's Cantina in Arroyo Seco where we enjoyed some post-ski, post hike beers and listened to some impromptu guitar music at the bar. At the advice of our contractor from Taos Style Builders, we dined at The Trading Post Cafe in Ranchos de Taos. The food was very good and the portions were substantial, so we are adding it to our growing list of favorite dining spots.
It is Spring Break and a lucky family from Texas will be visiting THE SKIES AT TAOS, with plans to ski and fish. We were in Taos with guests in February and the skiing was wonderful. I had my first opportunity to try out the cross-country skiing at the Enchanted Forest in Red River. It couldn't have been more perfect! I could have been more perfect, with greater lung capacity and younger legs but it was easy to take a break without getting cold and resume when one caught one's breath. We saw a large herd of long-horned sheep on the drive up to Red River. They placidly ignored us as we gaped at them to our hearts' content.

You might not think that CALEB'S CROSSING, a book about Martha's Vineyard has anything to do with Taos. Nevertheless, having chosen a new home in a region of our country with a stronger Native American presence than remains on the East Coast, I have begun to try to educate myself about that part of American history which was largely excluded from my formal studies. I have roots in the British colonies of New England. My forbears may well have been responsible, in the name of enlightenment, for some of the sorry treatment of natives to coastal New England. This instills in me the desire to learn so that I can better take into account my current ethical responsibilities. I also believe I have much to learn from these cultures. The "Crossing" referred to in the book's title refers to both a physical crossing from Martha's Vineyard to Cambridge and a cultural crossing by a youngWampanoag from "heathen ways" to a Harvard degree.
Essential, if heart-wrenching reading on the subject of Native Americans, is BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE by Dee Brown. This is actually my first post. I am just about to publish this website and will be very interested to have feedback. I will not be blogging every day but I will try to write my reflections about Taos and The Skies at Taos, particularly when I am there. My next visit is planned for early December. At that time I will be equipping the house with extra linens and a few additional amenities.
