I chose this house in Taos, in part, because of the communications, or signatures, in a sense, left by the woman, Patria, who built it and lived in it. They hint at who she was and what the house meant to her. Some of these communications were stories told to me by neighbors who knew her and participated in various festivities held at the house. She was sociable and enjoyed a good party. But there are other personal, creative "signatures". These, such as the mosaics around the sink in what is now the powder room, or the decorative painting in the master bathroom, I have been happy to keep. The concrete floors which go from the great room though archways into what are now the new guest quarters and sunroom, had cracks where the rooms joined. Patria had painted vines along one of the cracks to embellish it and convert it into something more pleasing to the eye - in fact, a " trompe l'oeil". The paint had begun to wear on these so, during my last visit, I refurbished what was already painted and added new vines in the other doorway, which are pictured above. Thus we have made lemonade from lemons.

I love vine artwork...I did a vine border at the top of my shower area in my master bathroom 11 yrs. ago. Unfortunately I need to repaint the bathroom walls and update so it will be painted over.
